As the European Tour heads to sunny southern Spain this week, with the World Golf Championship Volvo World Match Play Championship slated to take place at the famous Finca Cortesin Golf Club in the Andalucían region, Englishman Ian Poulter will be looking to become the first golfer since the South African golfing legend Ernie Els to win back to back titles at the famous course, which he had done in 2004 when he completed his second hat trick of title wins to make history.
Only three players have achieved back to back title wins at the famous course before that, and the names of Gary Player, Hale Irwin and Spain’s own legendary Seve Ballesteros still resonate throughout the course and if he can manage to achieve the win this year, Poulter can surely expect to go down in the annals of history at the event. The tech savvy Englishman, who is always keeping his fans updated on the social networking site Twitter, tweeted that he wanted to emulate these legends and create history.
Ian Poulter is considered to be one of the best match players in golf at the moment, having won the World Golf Championship Accenture Match Play Championship back in 2010, followed by his win at the Finca Cortesin cementing his status. Moreover, his win over Luke Donald at the Accenture Match Play Championship is sure to give him added confidence as he heads in to the tournament, looking to cement his place in the European Ryder Cup team as early as possible.
But Ian Poulter knows that it will be no easy task considering the field that he is set to compete against, but that has never held him back and one can hope he will give it his all tom win a title that he covets.
