Hot List Gold 2023

Our Review:

WHAT IT DOES: Although the hollow body is cast from 8620 carbon steel, the 4140 face is forged and as thin as 1.55 millimeters. Mass from the high-toe area has been removed to expand the unsupported face area for more flex, ball speed and forgiveness, creating a sweet spot that is 14 percent larger. Because the majority of iron impacts occur low on the face, the company’s hallmark speed pocket provides extra flex in that area. To assist feel, a low-density polyurethane foam is injected inside the clubhead. That not only produces a pleasing sensation at impact but saves weight that can be redistributed to help off-center hits.

WHY WE LIKE IT: There’s tons of tech in this iron, but it’s all neatly hidden from view, creating a clean look at address. The company advances its slot technology in a package that appeals to the better player—both in the bag and in their hands. The use of tungsten is cleverly done, too: It changes mass and position throughout the irons. In the 3-, 4- and 5-irons, 45 grams are used, and only 32 grams are allocated for the 6- and 7-irons. The reason is you need a lower center of gravity in the long irons to help create lift. Read more>>

Player Comments
Medium-Handicapper
"These have everything you need and nothing you don’t. The tech isn’t in your face. You get exceptional distance and can maneuver shots either way into the green."
Handicap, 8
Low-Handicapper
"The topline is appropriately sized. Feels soft and the ball jumps off the face. Mid-to-high ball flight. Picked up some distance, and misses won't lose any yardage."
Handicap, 2
Low-Handicapper
"I like the gradual crease in the offset. Compact head, not too big not too small. Nice pop to it off the face. Overall consistent club. You get what you want out of this club."

Description

The all-new P·770 features a compact, tour proven shape with a thinner top line, less offset in long irons and a shorter blade length when compared to P·790. With its hollow body construction and forged L-Face, the 2023 P·770 yields elevated distance, forgiveness and excellent feel in a smaller sized head. P·770 features FLTD CG™, a strategic design that positions the center of gravity (CG) lowest in long irons and progressively shifts it higher throughout the set to the shorter, weaker lofted irons. This encourages easier launch and playability in the long irons, while optimizing trajectory and spin in the scoring clubs. The sound and feel of P·770 is pristine with the addition of SpeedFoam™ Air™, which dampens sound and strategically supports the face. In addition to the added speed made possible by the thinnest P·770 face TaylorMade has produced, the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™ and Inverted Cone Technology help unlock increased ball speed across the face and forgiveness low in the face, where mis-hits happen most commonly.
